What is ‘pre-fetching’? Well – this actually refers to when your computer will pre-load frequently loaded applications and data to ensure that your programmes start running faster than without prefetching. I beg to differ with regard to many of the points in this article: -
Display settings should not really make much if any impact on performance with regard to any computer built in the last 5 years. File indexing in Windows XP can consume a rather large amount of resources; but once again this shouldn’t significantly impact any relatively modern computer. The same goes for the desktop picture.
Registry cleaner programs can be helpful in maintaining your computer and making it run a bit faster; but careful selection of a registry cleaner program is needed, as there are many registry cleaners out there that can do more harm than good. (I recommend PC Pitstop Optimize myself.)

As for fonts, once again there should be no major impact unless you install more than, I think the figure is something like 500 fonts, in XP. – I’m not sure about Vista and 7.
So yes; if anyone has a really old 32-bit computer running Windows XP or earlier, then this article, except for #5, is for you. – But there are many other things that can significantly slow a computer down; even a relatively new one.
